SOHR: TURKISH MILITARY TO DEPLOY DRONES, ELECTRONIC WARFARE EQUIPMENT IN NEW GREATER IDLIB POST

 

The Turkish military is building a new post in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on November 17.

The monitoring group said that the new post is being built in the eastern outskirts of the government-held town of Saraqib in the southern countryside of Idlib. The key town is located right on the Hama-Aleppo highway, the M5, and the Lattakia-Aleppo highway, the M4.

“Turkish forces intend to deploy vehicles in the new military post in the upcoming few hours, including an armored personnel carrier equipped with a communications jammer, drones and a communication system,” the SOHR quoted a source as saying.

The new post will be the Turkish military’s ninth position in the eastern and northern outskirts of Saraqib. The seven other positions are commonly known as the al-Dwair point; the Afes point; the Afes tank point; the al-Madjnah point; the al-Salihiyah and al-Mujazar gathering; the al-Barad point; the Ma’aarat Aliyah school point; the Tronba crossing point.

The situation in Greater Idlib remains unstable. A ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey last year is being violated on a daily basis by militants occupying the region.

In the last few months, the Turkish military deployed large reinforcements in Greater Idlib. The move was a response to reports of a near ground operation by the Syrian Arab and its allies in the region.

Turkey appears to be determined to maintain the status quo in Greater Idlib at all costs. This may soon lead to a serious confrontation in the region.
