Amid ongoing bread crisis | Fire breaks out in bread bakery in rural Deir Ezzor, putting it out of service

Deir Ezzor province: SOHR sources have reported that a fire broke out in a bread bakery in Al-Izbaa town in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor due to the low quality of oil used to run the bakery, which resulted in putting it out of service temporarily. This coincides with the deteriorating bread crisis in the region, especially after the recent decisions by the “Autonomous Administration”.

 

The bread bakery, which is known as “Al-Kilani” bakery, services hundreds of families, and it is supported by the leader of the SDF-backed Deir Ezzor Military Council “Abu Khawla”.

 

It is worth noting that the bread bakeries in SDF-held areas in Deir Ezzor province are struggling with acute shortage of flour allocations provided by the Autonomous Administration. The Autonomous Administration had deducted 25 percent of the allocation of flour provided to bread bakeries in areas under its control, which spurred the bread bakeries’ owners to start a strike a week ago, amid growing popular discontent in eastern and western countryside of Deir Ezzor.

 

The strikers have demanded revoke of the decision of deducting flour allocations, and they stressed that they would continue their strike until their demands were fulfiled, justifying their demands by the fact that the allocations of flour did not meet the needs of the residents because of the overpopulation in that region.

 

The decision of deducting flour allocations provided to bread bakeries in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor has ignited popular anger, particularly in Al-Busayrah, Ibriha and Al-Sabha. Meanwhile, residents set fire to rubber tires, blocked the main road in Al-Harijah town, expressing their rejection of the Autonomous Administration’s decision of raising the price of bread packs from 235 SYL to 300 SYL. Moreover, tribes’ elders and dignitaries called on revoking these decisions which further burdening the civilians.
