Israel has admitted that it is targeting Iranian alliance militia bases, such as the Hezbollah group in Lebanon, which has deployed fighters in Syria. It says it attacks weapons transport believed to be aimed at the militia.

Hezbollah is fighting on the side of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s army in a civil war 10 years ago.

Israel says Iran’s presence on its northern frontier is a red line, justifying strikes on facilities and weapons within Syria.

The conflict in Syria has killed nearly 500,000 people since it began in 2011 with the brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.
