Fire  in makeshift camp | Baby girl dies in northern Idlib

A baby girl died as a fire broke out in a tent in a makeshift camp hosting displaced persons from various areas of Syria in the vicinity of Maarat Masrin city, north of Idlib.

This incident comes in light of the difficult humanitarian conditions of the inhabitants of the camps in northwest Syria, due to low temperatures and the absence of services.

On December 20, SOHR activists monitored the suffering of displaced Syrians in camps in northwestern Syria that continues, with the onset of every winter, to worsen and to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.

The rain and strong winds are ravaging their dilapidated tents and further aggravating their suffering. The pitiful Syrians’ fragile tents cannot withstand the inclement weather as they are built of fragile, worn-out humanitarian blankets that do not protect them from the bitter cold. Displaced Syrians also are plagued with dire lack of winter clothing and heating.

In this context, sources of the Syrian Observatory reported that nearly 400 tents, in makeshift camps housing displaced persons from various areas of Syria in Idlib province, were damaged and destroyed by inclement weather.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reviews the number of damaged tents as follows:

“Abu Habbah” camp in Kfardariyan district, north of Idlib

– 40 completely destroyed tents
– 55 Partially damaged tents

Al-Layth “Jarbnoush” camp north of Idlib

– 20 totally destroyed tents
– 70 partially damaged tents

Al-Mahatah camp in KafrJalis area, north of Idlib

– 5 totally destroyed and uninhabitable tents
– 20 Partially damaged tents

“Ataa Lil-Rahman” camp in Kelli town, north of Idlib
