US does not support rehabilitating Syria’s Al-Assad

Commenting on Bahrain’s reappointment of its ambassador to Damascus, Washington declared that it does not support rehabilitating Syria’s President Bashar Al-Assad, Alhurra news website reported on Friday.

“Washington does not support rehabilitating Bashar Al-Assad,” a spokesperson for the US Department of State was reported by Alhurra saying.

According to Safa Press Agency, the spokesperson told Alhurra that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that the US does not support the normalisation of diplomatic relations with the Al-Assad regime.

“We will never lift the sanctions or support the rebuilding of Syria unless there is an irreversible progress towards a political solution,” the spokesperson reported Blinken saying.

The spokesperson also called for the countries that plan to deal with the Al-Assad regime to look at: “The atrocities he committed against the Syrians during the past decade, in addition to its efforts to prevent delivering humanitarian aid to many parts of the country.”

On Thursday, Bahrain announced the appointment of Waheed Mubarak Sayyar as its ambassador to Damascus, noting that this was part of a diplomatic shift in the Middle East as a growing number of Arab countries revive ties with Al-Assad.

This is the third Gulf state to regain ties with the Al-Assad regime, following the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
