SOHR: Several Syrian soldiers killed and injured in IS . missile attack

Five soldiers have been killed in a rocket attack in Syria. 20 others were injured, Syrian state news agency SANA reported. The government says the attack was carried out by the Islamic State terrorist group.

The United Kingdom-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says nine soldiers were killed and 15 injured in the attack. It would be members of militias affiliated with the government. The group speaks of a surprise attack that is believed to have been carried out by IS.

The rocket attack took place last night in an area controlled by the Syrian government: the al-Badia region in the center of the country, near Palmyra. An army official tells SANA that IS fired missiles at a bus carrying soldiers driving through the desert on the highway. Then the bus was shot at.

State news agency SANA reports that such attacks are more common on the highway connecting the center of the country to the eastern region. Syrian President Assad claims that US troops deployed there are facilitating the attacks.

His administration has made similar accusations against US and coalition forces stationed in Al-Tanf, a town on the border with Iraq, on several occasions.

US forces have limited presence in Syria to train and cooperate with the Kurdish-led militias and opposition groups.
