Lack of anesthesiologists | University obstetrics and gynaecology hospital cancels surgeries

SOHR warns against the alarming shortage of anesthesiologists in hospitals in regime-held areas due to large immigration wave

As Syria witnesses a large Immigration wave, especially the growing immigration of scientific competencies, due to the lack of job opportunities with salaries being commensurate with their experience, the security chaos in the country, the lack of basic essentials and the compulsory military service, medical sector in regime-held areas suffers from an alarming shortage of anesthesiologists.

Reliable SOHR sources have confirmed that the university obstetrics and gynaecology hospital in the capital, Damascus, has stopped admitting new surgeries due to a persisting shortage of anesthesiologists, while the hospital administration canceled several planned surgeries.

This comes in light of the severe shortage of doctors in regime-controlled areas, especially anesthesiologists. There are currently only 500 anesthesiologists in Syria, mostly elderly working in public and private hospitals, while 1,500 anesthesiologists are needed to cover a part of this shortage.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights warns against the large immigration wave from regime-controlled areas, particularly immigration of competencies, foremost among them are specialist doctors, due to worsening crises in the country, insecurity situation and low wages under the ruling authority, led by Bashar Al-Assad, which have worsened Syria’s dire humanitarian situation.

We, at Syrian Observatory, renew our appeal to the international community to find lasting and workable solutions to protect Syrian civilians from the series of disasters that plague their daily life and to ensure a peaceful transition of power.
