Rif Dimashq | Most prominent military opposition commander shot dead in Jabal Al-Sheikh

Rif Dimashq province: A former commander of “Al-Haramoun group” of opposition factions was killed after being shot by unidentified gunmen in Beit Jinn village at the foot of Jabal Al-Sheikh in the southwestern countryside of the capital Damascus, SOHR sources said.

According to Syrian Observatory sources, the commander who is known by his nickname “Moro,” was one of the most prominent persons who formed armed military battalions to fight the regime in 2011 in Beit Jinn area, and previously had served as commander of “Al-Haramun group,” which included several opposition military factions, before he underwent “settlement” in 2018 and did not join any military ranks.

The commander was shot by gunmen in Beit Jinn village days earlier, then was taken to a hospital in the capital Damascus, where he succumbed to his injuries this morning.

It is worth noting that this is the fifth attack in Rif Dimashq since the beginning of 2022.

Yesterday, Reliable sources informed SOHR that Masraba city in eastern Ghouta was witnessing a security alert by regime forces since January 9. Regime forces conducted security patrols and deployed temporary checkpoints.

This security alert came in the light of an assassination attempt that targeted a volunteer in a branch of “Political security” who is from Deir Ezzor province.

The political security volunteer was shot by unidentified gunmen while traveling in his car. However, the assassination attempt failed, and the gunmen fled.

According to local sources, the volunteer is infamous who served as an informant and is ratting on many people for the “Political Security”, which led to the arrest of dozens of young men earlier. He also headed each raid campaign and arrest carried out by the regime forces in the city and its surroundings.

On January 10, SOHR activists reported that an IED was donated in front of the house of the “general secretary of Al-Baath party” in the western Rif Dimashq Beit Tema in the early hours of Monday morning, causing material damage only.

On January 5, Reliable sources informed SOHR that unknown gunmen targeted a leader of a local faction serving under the banner of the 4th Division in Zakiyah town in west Al-Ghouta in Rif Dimashq. But, no information confirmed whether the attack killed or wounded him.

On the other hand, unidentified gunmen also, on January3, attempted to target the leader of a local militia serving under the banner of the military security in Mazraat Bait Jin farm in west Damascus. The gunfire killed one of the leader assistants and wounded another.
