New victory for justice | Thug of Assad regime sentenced to life in prison
Syrian Observatory congratulates the victims and families of the deceased on the fair trial of Anwar Raslan and renews its call for bringing all murderers of Syrian people to justice
On Thursday, the eyes of the world, particularly the Syrians, has turned to Koblenz region in the south-western German, to know the verdict of a regional high court in Koblenz against one of the thugs of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
As” justice” must also be seen to be done, no matter how long it takes, a German court has sentenced, Anwar Raslan who is a former intelligence officer in the regime’s security services, to life in prison for crimes of torture, extrajudicial killings of detainees in regime security prisons between 2011 and 2012.
Anwar Raslan, a former intelligence officer, who in February 2019 he has been arrested, faces life in jail if convicted of overseeing the murder of 58 people and the torture of 4,000 others at the Al-Khatib detention centre in Damascus, also known as “Branch 251”, in 2011 and 2012.
We, at the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, congratulate the families of victims on the trial of the thug of Bashar Al-Assad regime who killed and displaced the Syrians. We also hope that all those who financed, abetted, and participated in the killing of the Syrian people will be prosecuted.
Syrian Observatory asserts that this verdict is a true message to all those who have committed violations against the Syrian people of war crimes and crimes against humanity. This trail also gives hope to the victims and their families that the right must prevail, no matter how long it takes.
February 24, 2021, Eyad al-Gharib was convicted for aiding and abetting the torture of thousands of detainees inside the regime’s prisons. He is serving a four-and-a-half-year sentence.
August 26, 2022, the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court in Germany sentenced Khedr A.K., 43 years old, to life in prison, having been found guilty of executing a Syrian regime officer in Deir Ezzor in 2012. His co-defendant, Sami A.S., was sentenced to nine years in prison, for filming the crime.
The verdict against Anwar Raslan today, will have significant consequences for all these criminals from Bashar Al-Assad regime, some of whom fled to Europe as refugees, and fighters of extremist groups
We, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, renew our appeal to all Syrians in Europe who possess documents condemning persons who have abused the Syrian people to go to court and submit all these documents.
Today, we are very pleased with this verdict. We also hope that there will be an international trial for all those who aided, abetted, financed, and contributed to the killing, torture, and practice of violations against the Syrian people, headed by Bashar Al-Assad.
