Backed by Russian aircraft | Regime forces start new combing campaign in Deir Ezzor desert

ISIS kills 20 regime soldiers and loyal militiamen since early January

SOHR sources have reported that regime forces, backed by National Defence Forces (NDF), launched a new combing campaign this morning in Al-Duwayr desert near Al-Bokamal city in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, searching for ISIS members whose attacks have noticeably increased since early January. The combing operation is accompanied by air support by Russian fighter jets which have struck ISIS hideouts and positions in Deir Ezzor and Al-Raqqah deserts.

This comes after killing 20 regime soldiers and NDF militiamen in separate attacks by ISIS members in the Syrian desert since early 2022. The latest of these attacks was carried out yesterday when SOHR activists documented the death of five NDF members, some of whose bodies were burned down, and injury of 14 others in a new attack by ISIS cells on positions and bulwarks where National Defence Forces were stationed in Al-Salihiya desert near Al- Bokamal city, on the Syria-Iraq border in Deir Ezzor countryside.

Accordingly, the number of regime soldiers and NDF members who have been killed by ISIS in the Syrian desert since the beginning of 2022 has risen to 20. While ISIS has lost 11 members in the same period in Russian airstrikes on their hideouts and positions in the Syrian desert.

Since 24th of March 2019, SOHR has documented the death of at least 1,636 regime soldiers and loyalists of Syrian and non-Syrian nationalities, including at least three Russians, and 165 Iranian-backed militiamen of non-Syrian nationalities. All were killed in attacks, bombings and ambushes by the “Islamic State”, west of Euphrates region and the deserts of Deir Ezzor, al-Raqqah, Homs, al-Suwaidaa, Hama and Aleppo.

Also, four civilians working in gas fields, tens of shepherds and other civilians were killed and documented by SOHR in the same period, from late March 2019 until today. They were killed in attacks by ISIS cells. While 1,128 ISIS members were also killed in attacks and bombardment in the same period.
