Alarming development | Military intelligence in Palmyra kills departees from Al-Rukban camp
SOHR activists have documented the death of a civilian from Homs province under torture in “Military Intelligence” brunch in the Syrian desert.
According to the Syrian Observatory, the victim and his family had left Al-Rukban camp and headed to the areas controlled by the regime in Homs province nearly 20 days ago.
Military intelligence summoned the man who was in a school that served as a shelter for those leaving Al-Rukban camp in Homs.
Days after his summons, his family was informed of his death in the military intelligence branch in Palmyra, and they received his body from Homs military hospital.
Yesterday, SOHR published the following:
Amid the tragedy of 11,000 Syrian civilians in Al-Rukban camp “forgotten” in barren desert, a displaced inhabitant in the camp, originally from Homs province, had suffered heart infarction, according to the nurses in the camp who gave him some medicine. However, the man’s health conditions worsened, and he had to be transferred to a hospital. When, the Red Crescent car tried to get him out of the camp, Al-Musalas checkpoint refused to let the car pass and asked the patient to walk to the “military intelligence service” of the Syrian desert, which is located in Palmyra city in east Homs. The man was killed in the security service headquarters, while his brother was notified to receive the body and bury it.
Accordingly, the number of civilians died under torture in regime prisons since early January 2022 has risen to ten, all documented by SOHR.
As more fatalities are recorded and updated regularly, the number of civilians dying under torture in regime prisons since the beginning of the Syrian revolution has risen to 47,529, all documented by names: 47,126 men and young men, 339 children under the age of eighteen, and 64 women over the age of eighteen.
Reliable sources have informed the Syrian Observatory that the number of people killed, executed and/or died in regime prisons exceeded 105,000 people. Over 83% of the total death toll were killed and/or died in these prisons between May 2013 and October 2015, the period when the Iranian were supervising regime’s prisons. SOHR sources have also confirmed that more than 30,000 detainees were killed in the notorious prison of Saydnaya alone, while the second largest percentage of killing occurred in the Air-Force Intelligence detention facilities or prisons.
We, at the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), warn against the ongoing indifference by the warring powers in Syria to the issue of detainees and forcibly disappeared. We also appeal to the international community to seriously intensify its efforts to disclose the fate of the detainees and forcibly disappeared people, and identify and hold the perpetrators accountable.
