Ghuwayran, largest prison of ISIS members | Death toll rises to 40 and dozens of prisoners escape

Al-Hasakah province: Reliable sources have informed SOHR that the number of fatalities due to the violent clashes, that have been ongoing since Thursday night in Ghuwayran prison and its nearby areas in Al-Hasakah city, has risen to 41: 20 members of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish), counter-terrorism forces and guards of the prison, 16 ISIS members and five civilians.

The number of deaths is expected to rise further because many people have sustained injuries, while there are unconfirmed reports of more fatalities.

In the same context, SOHR sources confirmed that dozens of ISIS members managed to escaped from Ghuwayran prison and deployed in its surroundings and nearby neighbourhoods, after ISIS prisoners had controlled the prison and seized weapons and ammunition, amid ongoing violent clashes between the two sides.

It is worth noting that Ghuwayran prison hosts nearly 3,500 ISIS leading figures and members, and it is the only prison in the world hosting such large number of ISIS prisoners.

It is also worth noting that this was the most violent and largest attack on populated areas since elimination of ISIS as a controlling power in March 2019.
