Nearby Ghuwayran prison | International Coalition aircraft target ISIS prisoners and cells’ hideouts

Al-Hasakah province: Reliable sources have informed SOHR that the International Coalition aircraft continue to fly over areas nearby Ghuwayran prison, amid attacks on the vicinity of the prison and Al-Zouhour neighbourhood in Al-Hasakah city.

This coincides with ongoing combing operations by the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) and the counter-terrorism forces in the region, amid attempts to restore control of the prison, after nearly 18 hours ISIS largest and deadliest attack on populated areas since elimination of ISIS as a controlling power three years ago.

Earlier today, reliable sources informed SOHR that the number of fatalities due to the violent clashes, that continued since Thursday night in Ghuwayran prison and its nearby areas in Al-Hasakah city, rose to 41: 20 members of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish), counter-terrorism forces and guards of the prison, 16 ISIS members and five civilians.

The number of deaths is expected to rise further because many people have sustained injuries, while there are unconfirmed reports of more fatalities.

In the same context, SOHR sources confirmed that dozens of ISIS members managed to escaped from Ghuwayran prison and deployed in its surroundings and nearby neighbourhoods, after ISIS prisoners had controlled the prison and seized weapons and ammunition, amid ongoing violent clashes between the two sides.

It is worth noting that Ghuwayran prison hosts nearly 3,500 ISIS leading figures and members, and it is the only prison in the world hosting such large number of ISIS prisoners.

It is also worth noting that this was the most violent and largest attack on populated areas since elimination of ISIS as a controlling power in March 2019.
