Recent development | SDF military forces open fire on Ghuwayran prison’s gate, attempting to put an end to ISIS prisoners’ riot

Al-Hasakah province: SOHR sources have reported that joint forces of SDF, Internal Security Forces (Asayish) and Counter-Terrorism Forces opened medium and light machineguns fire on the gates of Ghuwayran prison in Al-Hasakah, attempting to prevent more prisoners from escaping, put an end to the riot inside the prison and regain control of the prison which is still under full control by ISIS members. Moreover, SDF military forces continue combing operations in the neighbourhoods around the prison, searching for ISIS escapees.

A few hours ago, SOHR activists reported that International Coalition jets fired flares over Al-Sina’a prison in Ghuwayran neighbourhood in Al-Hasakah city, along with renewed clashes in the vicinity of the prison and nearby residential neighbourhoods.

SOHR activists monitored International Coalition Forces on high alert in Al-Hasakah province with flights by jets over the region, amid ongoing clashes and combing operations in the vicinity of Ghuwayran prison.

According to SOHR sources, dozens of employees and guards of Ghuwayran prison were held hostages by ISIS cells inside the prison.

It is worth noting that, ISIS fighters continued to control Ghuwayran prison and most of its divisions, while the Internal Security Forces “Asayesh” and SDF were encircling the prison, amid ongoing clashes in Ghuwayran and Al-Zuhour neighbourhoods in Al-Hasakah.

SOHR activists had reported that International Coalition jets struck the building of the Faculty of Economics in Al-Hasakah city, where ISIS fugitive prisoners holed up. However, no further details were reported about the number of casualties and material damage caused by the attack..

The Faculty of Economics is located in the the part controlled by SDF of Al-Hasakah city.

On the same context, International Coalition and SDF brought in reinforcement to the vicinity of Ghuwayran prison in Al-Hasakah city, amid ongoing security chaos in the area.

Earlier today, SOHR sources reported that US fighter jets carried out two raids on the hideouts of ISIS cell and escaped prisoners in Al-Zouhour neighbourhood and the vicinity of Al-Sina’a prison in Al-Hasakah city.

Meanwhile, the death toll of ISIS deadliest attack in three years rose to 67: 39 ISIS members, five civilians and 23 members of Asayish Forces, the prison’s guards and counter-terrorism forces, all killed in the ongoing violent clashes since yesterday

The number of deaths is expected to rise further because many people have sustained injuries, while there are unconfirmed reports of more fatalities.

On the other hand, the military forces continued their attempts to restore control of the prison, amid ongoing combing operations in the prison’s vicinity and Ghuwayran and Al-Zouhour neighbourhoods, where there were dozens of ISIS prisoners free, after escaping from the prison in the early hours of Friday morning.

Nearly 100 prisoners were arrested, while SDF military forces imposed a curfew in the region and intensified security measures on the entrances of Al-Hasakah city, preventing anyone from entering or leaving the city.

It is worth noting that Ghuwayran prison hosts nearly 3,500 ISIS leading figures and members, and it is the only prison in the world hosting such large number of ISIS prisoners.

It is also worth noting that this was the most violent and largest attack on populated areas since elimination of ISIS as a controlling power in March 2019.
