Rampant violence in Daraa | Deaths and injuries in 15 attacks in ten days

SOHR warns against the repercussions of the rampant and escalated security chaos and renews appeals to protect Syrian civilians

 

 

Since early February, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has monitored a marked escalation of violence in Daraa province, south of Syria. The Syrian Observatory has documented 15 attacks amid security chaos, leaving casualties and deaths; six persons were killed: Three civilians and three members of the factions who had struck settlements and reconciliations deals.

The Syrian Observatory has monitored and tracked all key developments of the assassinations and attacks that have taken place in Daraa since early February, the details of these attacks are categorised as follows:

February 1: A former member of the opposition factions, who struck a “settlement deal” after the regime forces captured Daraa in July 2018, was killed after being shot by unknown persons in Al-Muzayrib town.

February 2: A new assassination was committed in the western countryside of Daraa, where a former member of the opposition factions was killed, who had struck a “settlement deal” and did not join any military ranks.

February 3: Unidentified gunmen shot a civilian from Al-Nasriyah town, in the middle of Jassim city in the northern Daraa countryside. The civilian died in the hospital.

February 6: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a civilian who worked for a local faction in Al-Hirak city in the eastern Daraa countryside before the reconciliation of 2018, however, he wasn’t injured.

February 7: An explosion was heard in Atman town in Daraa countryside as an IED that was planted by unknown people near one of the houses in the entrance of the town in north Daraa went off.

February 7: An explosion was heard in Daal town in central Daraa as a grenade was detonated near a high school in the northern neighbourhood of the city, but no casualties were reported.

February 7: sounds of gunfire and clashes were heard near a military checkpoint of the air intelligence at Damascus-Oman highway near western Al-Ghariyah town in the east Daraa countryside.

February 9: An IED exploded in the car of the leader of a group working for the regime military security service near Al-Kherba checkpoint in Daraa city. The leader sustained severe injuries and lost his feet, but he died of his wounds after arriving at the national hospital in Daraa city.

February 9: An IED explosion targeted a regime patrol in the area between Sayda and Al-Na’imah in eastern Daraa, which left several regime soldiers injured.

February 9: An IED exploded in Sajnah neighbourhood in Daraa city, but no casualties were reported

February 9: Unknown gunmen shot dead a civilian in Nawa city in the western countryside of Daraa. According to the victim’s family, he returned from the United Arab Emirates a short time ago, and he did not join any military bodies.

February 9: Unidentified gunmen shot a civilian dead in Al-Yadouda town in Daraa countryside.

The victim was a civilian from Homs and lived in Al-Yadouda town in Daraa countryside and was commander to a group among opposition factions.

February 9: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a member of the Reform Commission in Horan and works in Al-Awqaf Directorate in Daraa, while he was in Sahm Al-Julan in the western countryside in Daraa, however he wasn’t injured.

February 10: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a “member of the Central Committee in the western countryside of Daraa,” accompanied by two ex-faction combatants who had struck settlements and reconciliation deals, in the town of Atman, west of Daraa, killing a former fighter and wounded two others.

 

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has been all along warning against the repercussions of the rampant and crippling chronic crises and security chaos in regime-controlled areas, especially Daraa. We, at the Syrian Observatory, renew appeal to protect the civilians and call upon all international actors not to abandon their responsibility and obligations towards the people of Syria and urge them to find a lasting solution to the tragedy of millions of Syrians and bring Al-Assad, his affiliates and all those responsible for violations and those who aided and abetted the killing of Syrian people to justice.
