Daraa | IED blast kills man while trying to plant it on Damascus-Daraa highway

Daraa province: SOHR activists have reported an explosion of IED near Umm Al-Mayadh town in Daraa countryside, while an attempt by a person to plant it on Damascus-Daraa International Highway, killing him immediately. The victim’s identity remains unknown so far.

Yesterday, SOHR activists reported two attempted assassinations had killed three persons. In Namr town in north Daraa, unknown gunmen had shot a man serving for state security branch which caused the death of him and another one from the same family. Meanwhile, in Daraa Al-Balad, a member of “Military Security” was shot dead by unknown gunmen and died of wounds he sustained in a hospital.

Since early February, the Syrian Observatory has documented 27 incidents of killings and security instability in Daraa, causing the death of 21 persons: nine civilians, six members of the factions who had struck settlements and reconciliation deals and three unidentified people. Some were also wounded in the attacks.

Since the beginning of the security chaos in Daraa in early June 2019, Syrian Observatory activists have documented more than 1,349 attacks and assassination attempts by gunfire and detonations of IEDs, motorcycle-bombs and car-bombs. These attacks and assassinations claimed the lives of 986 persons, categorised as follows:

• Four local gunmen of anti-reconciliation groups.
• 326 civilians, including 18 women and 27 children.
• 421 regime soldiers, loyalists and collaborators with regime security services.
• 167 fighters of factions that struck “reconciliation and settlements” deals with the regime and became in the ranks of regime’s security branches, including former commanders.
• 31 Syrian militiamen affiliated to the Lebanese Hezbollah and Iranian forces.
• 37 members of the so-called 5th Corps which was established by Russia.
• Three unknown people.
