SOHR: Turkey, affiliated factions escalate violence in NE Syria

Areas in northeast Syria have witnessed an escalation of violence by the Turkish forces and the Turkish-backed armed factions during the second week of March.

On March 12, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Media Center documented that three children were wounded in  a Turkish shelling targeted al-Hisha village northeast Ain Issa town, in the eastern countryside of Raqqa.

The media office of the Committee of the Displaced People of Sere Kaniye documented the death of the 10-year-old Mahmud Ismail of Tel Arqam village in the countryside of the Turkish-seized Sere Kaniye.

On March 14, members of the Turkish-backed al-Hamza Division killed the child after residents of the village prevented them from stealing power cables.

The members of the aforementioned faction opened fire indiscriminately on the residents killing Ismail immediately.

Since October 2019, the Turkish forces and the affiliated factions have been controlling Sere Kaniye and Tel Abyad following the military operation “Peace Spring”.

The Turkish military operation then displaced about 300,000 civilians, according to human rights reports.

On Tuesday, a medical source of Martyr Khabat Hospital in Derbasiyah city, north of Hasakah, told North Press, “Two bodies of young men, who were found near Syria-Turkey border west of the city, arrived in the hospital.”

After subjecting the bodies to the medical check-ups, it was revealed that they bore torture signs caused via sharp tools.

The two dead were killed at hands of the Turkish border guards (gendarmeries) while trying to cross into the Turkish territory, local sources told North Press.

Since early 2022, eight civilians including two children were killed and 13 others including three children were wounded by the Turkish gendarmeries in different areas near the Syria-Turkey border, according to statistics by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Yesterday, a civilian car was bombed by a Turkish drone in the vicinity of the village of Hoshan in the western countryside of Ain Issa, causing only material damage, SDF Media Center reported.
