Second time in hours | Explosions rock the Coalition’s largest base in Syria
Deir Ezzor province: SOHR activists have reported hearing new explosions, just before noon, in the area of Al-Omar oil field in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, which hosts the largest base of International Coalition Forces in Syria. However, it is not known yet if the explosions were caused by military drills by the International Coalition or by a new round of rocket fire on the base.
This comes a few hours after rocket attacks by Iranian-backed militias on Al-Omar base, which left several people injured.
A few hours ago, Observatory activists reported hearing laud explosions in the early hours of Thursday morning in the area of Al-Omar oil field in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, in east Euphrates region. The explosions were caused by an attack with rockets fired from areas held by Iranian-backed militias on the opposite bank of Euphrates river, which hit positions in Al-Omar oil field which hosts the largest base of International Coalition Forces in Syria.
According to Observatory sources, the number of rockets fired on the Coalition base reached five. However, only two rockets exploded.
After this attack, International Coalition Forces fired several rockets on positions of Iranian-backed militias in west Euphrates region.
It is worth noting that this was the first attack of its kind in nearly three months.
On January 5, SOHR sources reported that the explosions, which rocked positions in the eastern and western Euphrates at 05:30 am Damascus time, were caused by exchange of rocket fires between Coalition forces and Iranian-backed militias.
At that time, Iranian proxies fired three rockets from Al-Mayadeen desert in west Euphrates region, targeting Al-Omar oil field, the largest Coalition base in Syria, in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor.
According to Syrian Observatory sources, one the shells hit a helipad at the base, while the two other shells hit empty positions, causing material damage only. Coalition forces reacted to the Iranian bombardment by firing two shells on Al-Mayadeen desert.
