Israeli attack on Damascus airport | Runway and control tower sustain damage and air flights transported to Aleppo airport

Reliable sources have told SOHR that the northern runway at Damascus international airport was put out of service, after having sustained damage due to the Israeli strikes which targeted three warehouses of Iranian-backed militias in the perimeter of the airport this dawn. Moreover, the control tower inside the airport sustained damage. Accordingly, flights have been suspended in Damascus international airport, where the Syrian airline has informed passengers, whose flights were scheduled to take off from the airport today, that their flights would be delayed for 48 hours. Moreover, air traffic has been transported from Damascus international airport to Aleppo international airport until the “Airport Management” accomplish maintenance of the northern runway in Damascus international airport. It is worth noting that the northern runway was the only runway on service, after the southern runway was put out of service in 2021 due to Israeli strikes which targeted shipments and warehouses of Iranian-backed militias in the perimeter of the airport. The southern runway has not been maintained so far due to the considerable damage it sustained. On the other hand, engineers in the airport had warned against a potential damage to the northern runway, after depending on it completely, where they demanded decrease of flights to Damascus, especially flights by military cargo Iranian planes which carried tons of weapons and ammunitions.

SOHR reported earlier that that flights from and to Damascus international airport was suspended, as the Syrian airline informed passengers whose flights were scheduled to be today that their flights would be delayed for 48 hours. This came after the Israeli attacks which targeted warehouses of Iranian-backed militias in the area of Damascus international airport this dawn.

Earlier today SOHR activists reported hearing loud explosions in the capital Damascus and Rif Dimashq at 04:00 am local time, which were caused by Israeli bombardment on warehouses of Iranian-backed militias in the surrounding areas of Damascus international airport.

According to SOHR sources, fires were seen in the three sites which were attacked. Also, many ambulances were seen rushing on the road to Damascus international airport, amid confirmed reports of the injury of several Iranian-backed militiamen.

It is worth noting that was the 15 Israeli attack in Syrian territory since early 2022.

On June 6, SOHR sources reported hearing loud explosions in the southern part of Rif Dimashq due to Israeli airstrikes on military positions in Al-Kaswa area were members of the Lebanese Hezbollah and regime Air-Defence forces are deployed. Ten Israeli missiles hit these positions, while at least seven others were intercepted by Air-Defences. Moreover, a missile hit Akraba town causing material damages.
