Daraa security chaos | 62 people killed in over 70 attacks in 45 days

Although the security situation has deteriorated and chaos has become rampant and on the rise throughout Daraa province in regime-held areas, areas under the control of Russian-backed factions and areas controlled by Iranian-backed militias, near and at the border with occupied Golan and Jordan, the dominant military forces completely failed to put an end to the security chaos incidents, which is represented in daily attacks carried out whether by shootings or planting of landmines and other ways.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) activists have documented 71 attacks and assassinations in Daraa in nearly a month and a half. These attacks left at least 62 people, dead; they are as follows:

– 22 civilians.

– 31 regime military personnel, “collaborators” with security services and members with settled-status working for regime services and backed militias.

– Four drug traffickers.

– Two militiamen of the Russian-backed 5th Corps.

– An ex-combatant who did not join any military formation, after striking a reconciliation deal.

– An unidentified gunman.

– A defector from regime’s army.

In June, SOHR has documented 20 attacks in Daraa that left 15 people dead, and they are as follows:

• Seven civilians.

• Seven regime soldiers.

• A former faction fighter who did not join any military formation, after striking a reconciliation deal.

While in May, SOHR documented 51 attacks in different places in Daraa province, which left 47 deaths, and they are:

• 15 civilians.

• 24 regime military personnel, members with settled-status and “collaborators” with security services.

• Two militiamen of the Russian-backed Fifth Division.

• An unidentified militiaman.

• A dissident regime soldier.

• Four drug dealers.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has been all along warning against the repercussions of the rampant and crippling chronic crises and security chaos in regime-controlled areas, especially Daraa. We, at the Syrian Observatory, renew our appeal to protect the civilians and call upon all international actors not to abandon their responsibility and obligations towards the people of Syria and urge them to find a lasting solution to the tragedy of millions of Syrians and bring Al-Assad, his affiliates and all those responsible for violations and those who aided and abetted the killing of Syrian people to justice.

It is worth noting that since early 2022, the number of attacks documented by SOHR in Daraa province has risen to 252, which left 206 people dead; and they are as follows:

• 100 civilians, including two women and four children.

• 84 regime military personnel, “collaborators” with security services and members with settled-status working for regime services and backed militias.

• 11 former fighters who did not join any military formation, after striking reconciliation deals.

• An ex-ISIS member.

• Seven unidentified people.

• Three militiamen of the Russian-backed 5th Corps.
