Suicide rate in Syria | Stifling economic crisis, extreme poverty, and lack of essentials prompts suicide rates to soar

Since early June, SOHR documented 11 suicide cases, including two women and child, across Syria

Day after day, the rate of suicide has been increasing significantly across Syria prompted by lack of essentials, extreme poverty and deteriorating economic conditions. All these causes, the shattered dreams to have a better life and dire living conditions and the inability of the individual to sustain his or her livelihood have profoundly affected Syrian society and increased the psychological problems caused by depression.

Since early June, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights SOHR) has documented 11 suicide cases in various ways, including two women and a child, across Syria.

Here are further details of suicide cases that have occurred since early June:

• June 2: A 28-year-old committed suicide at his house in Al-Hilaliyah neighborhood in Al-Qamishli city, by detonating a bomb in himself.

• June 2: A 25-year-old man hanged himself at his house in Al-Hilaliyah district in Al-Qamishli city.

• June 4: A medical student hanged himself inside his house in Al-Mushairefah neighborhood in Al-Hasakah city.

• June 5: A girl was dead at Darkoush hospital, west of Idlib after having “Phosphine tablets,” which are used to kill insects, nearly a week earlier in a suicide attempt.

• June 5: A man committed suicide by shooting himself in Abyan Samaa’n in western Aleppo countryside.

• June 8: A young man committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Al-Raqqah, nearly a month after returning from Germany.

• June 21: A 42-year-old woman stabbed herself in the wrist and abdomen to death in Safita city in Tartous countryside.

• June 21: A man committed suicide by shooting himself in Matna village in Masyaf countryside, Hama province.

• June 23: A young man blew himself up with a hand grenade at his house in Tel Barak area in Al-Hasakah countryside.

• June 24: A 13-year-old boy from Afrin, north-west of Aleppo, committed suicide by taking a “Phosphine tablet. The boy died in a hospital.

• June 25: A young man hanged himself inside his house in Da’el city in central Daraa countryside.
