Amid lack of monitoring | Residents complain of increasing price of electricity in Al-Hasakah

Al-Hasakah province: Areas under the control of the Autonomous Administration in north and east Syria have experienced considerable confusion among the owners of power generators, who provide this region with electricity, and among institutions affiliated to the Municipality of Al-Shaa’b, because of the unspecified price of amperes. This confusion has triggered broad public anger, especially with the current economic hardship in that region.

In this context, SOHR sources have reported that the owners of fuel-operating electrically-generated amperes in SDF-controlled areas have raised the subscription of the service in Al-Hasakah city and countryside, amid absence of deterrence and lack of monitoring by relevant authorities.

According to SOHR sources, the price of an ampere in Al-Hasakah province has increased from 6,000 SYP to 8,000 SYP, while electricity is available during day time only.

On the other hand, the price of an ampere in Al-Qamishli city and Al-Darbasiyah and Amuda districts has increased from 5,000 SYP to 6,000 up to 7,000 SYP, while generators are in service for only eight hours a day.

Meanwhile, the region’s residents have complained of the lack of monitoring by relevant institutions and authorities of the Autonomous Administration and their failure to care about the residents’ affairs in areas under its control, as well as the authorities’ indifference to put an end to the greediness of influential individuals and war lords who exploit the dreadful living conditions of civilians and trade in their plights.

Residents in Al-Hasakah have called upon the relevant authorities and officials of the Autonomous Administration to intervene and find a new mechanism to curb exploitation and to improve the deteriorating economic situation in the region.

It is worth noting that the rate of migration from SDF-controlled areas to Europe via routes used for smuggling has alarmingly escalated, despite the great risks and challenges which immigrants face during such trips.

On October 1, SOHR activists reported that the people of Al-Darbasiyah district in Al-Hasakah countryside were suffering from power outages for the fourth consecutive day, while the reason behind this blackout remained unknown. This coincided with a growing state of discontent among the residents who called upon relevant authorities to find workable solutions to put an end to their suffering.

Moreover, the region’s residents assign full responsibility for the failure to find a solution to the electricity and water crises to the relevant authorities and officials. They also criticised indifference of the authorities which did not issue any statements to inform the people of the current situation, demanding the authorities secure basic livelihood.
