SOHR: Russia Raids Faction In Syria’s Afrin, Casualties Reported

On Sunday morning, Russian air force raided the eastern countryside of the Kurdish-city of Afrin in northern Syria, targeting an outpost of a faction, leaving casualties.

Russian warplanes targeted an outpost of the Turkish-backed Suqour al-Sham Brigades in the village of Qatmah, east of Afrin, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported.

The air raid led to the killing of two militants of the faction and the injury of nine others.

The SOHR said, Russian warplanes carried out five raids at least, targeting the area between the villages of Qatmah and Baflon, which are controlled by Levant Front (al-Jabha al-Shmaiya), a Turkish-backed armed faction.

Afrin, a Kurdish city in the north of Aleppo, has been under the occupation of Turkey since March 2018 following a military operation called “Olive Branch” which resulted in the displacement of about 300.000 people of the original inhabitants of the city and its countryside.

The city and its countryside witnessed fighting between Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front) along with Sultan Suleiman Shah (al-Amshat) faction and al-Hamza Division on one hand, and Levant Front along with Third Legion and Ahrar al-Sham faction.

The fighting ended with the control of the HTS over Afrin and its countryside.
