During October | Five civilians died under torture in regime prisons

The regime’s “Security Services” keep committing crimes against prisoners and forcibly kidnapped people in regime prisons and security branches, where SOHR activists documented the death of five civilians under torture in regime prisons during October.

The details of the death of the civilians are presented as follows:

On October 2: SOHR activists reported that a young man died under brutal torture in the regime’s Airforce Intelligence Branch, after seven years of being arrested in Al-Tel city in Rif Dimashq.

On October 3: A young man from Muhin town in eastern Homs countryside died under torture in Saydnaya “human slaughterhouse” prison. According to SOHR activists, the young man, who was the only son of his family, was arrested by regime forces after leaving with his family from Al-Rukban camp four years ago and was arrested in the notorious Saydnaya prison.

On October 10: SOHR activists documented the death of a civilian from Palmyra under torture in the notorious Sednaya prison after being arrested a year ago, although his family paid huge sums of money to the regime’s security services to remove him from Sednaya prison. It is worth noting that the man fled the dire living conditions in Al-Rukban camp one year and eight months before with no guarantees to protect him from arrest.

On October 31: SOHR activists documented the death of a civilian and his son under torture in the regime’s prison. The two victims were arrested following striking settlement deals with the regime forces and fleeing dire living conditions in Al-Rukban camp in 2020. It is worth noting that the Lebanese Hezbollah militias arrested the man and his son after they left Al-Rukban camp and also refused to tell their families their whereabouts. Accordingly, the number of civilians who died under torture in regime prisons which has been documented by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights since the beginning of 2022 has risen to 86 including two dissident army officers and 38 people from Eastern Ghouta whose death certificates were delivered by regime to their families in February. Earlier, SOHR activists reported that the Lebanese Hezbollah militia and the regime’s security services continue to hide the fate of a father and his son after arresting them two years ago after they left Al-Rukban camp and refuse to inform their families of their whereabouts.

Accordingly, the number of civilians who died under torture in regime prisons which has been documented by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights since the beginning of 2022 has risen to 87 including two dissident army officers and 38 people from Eastern Ghouta whose death certificates were delivered by regime to their families in February.

We, at SOHR, renew our appeal to the international community to exert pressure on the Syrian regime to release tens of thousands of detainees, disclose the fate of the forcibly disappeared people and respect the rights of Syrians to live and enjoy freedom.
