In 24 hours | Landmine explosions kill and injure nearly ten civilians mostly children

SOHR renews its appeal to all relevant international bodies to urgently address the problem and remove old, unexploded ordnance from Syria

War remnants such as landmines, IEDs and unexploded bodies are still claiming the lives of civilians in different areas of Syria, where SOHR activists documented the death and injury of nearly ten civilians, mostly children, during the past 24 hours.

The mentioned cases took place in the following areas:
Daraa: 5
Al-Suwaydaa desert: 1
Eastern of Deir Ezzor: 2
Ma’arat Al-Na’man in eastern Idlib countryside: 1

The details of the reported cases are summarised as follows:
On October 2: SOHR activists documented the death of a young man in his 20s, due to the explosion of a landmine of war remnants, while his vehicle was passing on Toraby Road eastern of Qinyan Al-Kaal well in Al-Suwaydaa desert.

On October 3: SOHR activists documented the injury of two children, due to the explosion of a landmine of war remnants in Hatla town eastern of Deir Ezzor within areas held by regime forces and regime-backed militias.

On October 3: Five children were injured by the explosion of an old projectile in Daraa Al-Balad, when they were playing with it.

On October 3: SOHR activists documented the severe injury of a child and the amputation of his hand, due to the explosion of a landmine of war remnants in Ma’arat Al-Na’san town in eastern Idlib countryside.

Accordingly, SOHR has documented the death of 191 civilians, including ten women and 97 children, due to explosions of old landmines, unexploded shells and bombs across Syria since early 2022. In addition, 286 civilians, including 17 women and 166 children, sustained various injuries in the same period. Among the total death toll, a man and his son were killed in the collapse of a war-damaged building in Darya city in Rif Dimashq, four civilians were killed in the collapse of another building in Jubar neighbourhood and a child was killed in the collapse of a house in Adawan in Idlib countryside.
