SOHR: Israeli strike on Damascus wounds two Syrian soldiers

At least two Syrian regime soldiers were wounded as a result of an Israeli strike in the vicinity of the capital Damascus on Tuesday, marking the first Israeli attack on the war-torn country in over a month.

Syrian air defenses intercepted several Israeli missiles in the early hours of Tuesday, according to Syrian state media (SANA), adding that at least two soldiers were wounded in the attack.

The strike also resulted in material damages, SANA noted.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that at least four Israeli missiles targeted positions of Iran-affiliated militias in the vicinity of Damascus, killing two unidentified individuals believed to be members of Lebanon’s Hezbollah group.

The attack is the first Israeli strike on Syria since November 13, where at least two Syrian regime soldiers were killed and three others were wounded in a strike on the central Homs province.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on regime-controlled areas of Syria throughout its 11-year civil war, often claiming to target Iran-affiliated militias, such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah group which supports the Syrian army.

Israel rarely comments on airstrikes attributed to it in Syria but it has repeatedly warned that it would not tolerate an increase in Iranian presence.

The Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi confirmed on Wednesday that the Israeli Air Force had carried out an airstrike targeting an arms convoy along the Iraqi-Syrian border in early November, likely referring to the attack where at least 15 pro-Iranian fighters were killed.
