Regime prisons in December | Five civilians di*e under tor*ture

The regime’s security services continue to commit crimes against detainees and forcibly absentees in their prisons and detention centres and to practice the most severe forms and means of torture against them.

Since early December 2022, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has documented the death of five civilians under torture in regime prisons. The victims are from Daraa, Homs and Deir Ezzor.

We, at the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, renew our appeals to the International community to exert pressure on the Syrian regime to release tens of thousands of detainees, respecting human rights and freedom of public expression.

Here are further details on torture victims documented in December 2022:

• December 14: A young man in his thirties from Nawa city in the western countryside of Daraa, died under torture in the regime’s “notorious” Sednaya prison, following an arrest of nearly four years.

• December 19: A man died under torture in regime’s prison after four years of detention. According to SOHR activists, the detainee, born in 1972 in Al-Qusayr town in Homs countryside, was handed over to his family on December 16.

• December 22: A young man, a dissident from the regime army, died under torture in the “notorious” Sednaya prison after a nine-year arrest. The young man is from Talbisah city in the northern countryside of Homs.

• December 23: A young man, a dissident from the regime’s army, died under torture in regime’s prison after a year and a half of detention, from Al-Asharah city in the western countryside of Deir Ezzor.

• December 24: A man from Busra Al-Sham, east of Daraa, died under torture in regime prison after more than ten years of detention. The news of his death was announced today. The cities and countryside of Daraa are witnessing protests denouncing the settlement operations and demanding the release of detainees from Daraa and the disclosure of their fate in prisons.

Since early 2022, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has documented the death of nearly 103 civilians under torture in regime prisons, including three regime dissident officers, three regime army defectors, a fighter of a local faction in Daraa and 38 civilians from eastern Ghouta in Rif Dimashq, whose death certificates were delivered by the Syrian regime to their families in February.
