2022 | 245 people ki*lled in ground bombardment and clashes in “de-escalation zone”

SOHR documented the death of 254 people in ground attacks in the “de-escalation zone,” stretching from the north-eastern mountains of Latakia to the north-western suburbs of Aleppo city running through both Hama and Idlib, in 2022; they are as follows:

 

  • 42 civilians, including 14 children and six women, killed by regime forces.

 

  • 64 members, including a commander, in Jaysh Al-Izza and three Uzbek jihadists were killed by regime forces.

 

  • 148 members of regime forces, including 14 officers and ten Iranian-backed gunmen from Nubl and Al-Zahraa, were killed by rebels and jihadists.

 

The monthly death toll is distributed as follows:

 

-January: Five people:

 

  • A little girl.

 

  • Four regime soldiers.

 

-February: 19 people:

 

  • 13 civilians, including two children and two women.

 

  • Four regime soldiers.

 

  • Two rebels.

 

-March: 11 people:

 

  • Nine regime soldiers.

 

  • Two rebels.

 

-April: 11 people:

 

  • Four children.

 

  • Five members of regime forces, including two officers.

 

  • Two rebels.

 

-May: 20 people:

 

  • Three members of regime forces, including an officer.

 

  • Ten Shiaa militiamen from Nebl and Al-Zahraa.

 

  • Seven members of opposition factions, including a jihadist.

 

-June: 13 people:

 

  • Four members of regime forces, including an officer.

 

  • Nine rebels, mostly from the National Liberation Front.

 

-July: Eight people:

 

  • Three civilians: two children and a woman.

 

  • Five rebels.

 

-August: 18 people:

 

  • Five regime soldiers.

 

  • 13 members of Hayyaat Tahrir Al-Sham and opposition factions, including a commander in Jaysh Al-Izza and three Uzbek jihadists.

 

-September: 27 people:

 

  • A civilian.

 

  • 20 regime soldier.

 

  • Six members of opposition factions and Hayyaat Tahrir Al-Sham.

 

-October: 24 people:

 

  • Three civilians, including a woman and a child.

 

  • 18 members of regime forces, including an officer.

 

  • Three rebels.

 

-November: 46 people:

 

  • 13 civilians, including three children.

 

  • 25 members of regime forces, including ten officers.

 

  • Eight members of rebel and jihadist factions.

 

-December: 52 people:

 

  • Four civilians, including a child.

 

  • 41 regime soldiers.

 

  • Seven rebels.

 

Among the total death toll, 16 people were killed in two massacres committed by regime forces and documented by SOHR, with the first taking place on February 12 when a family of six: two men, two children and two women, were killed in regime bombardment on positions in Maarrat Al-Na’san.

 

The second massacre was committed on November 6 when regime forces shelled areas hosting refugee camps in western Idlib, killing ten civilians: two women, three children and five men, including one repatriated recently from Turkey by force, and injuring 75 others.
