California man acknowledges trip to Syria was effort to join, help Islamic State terror group

Federal prosecutors say a 21-year-old California man who tried to travel to Syria pleaded guilty to attempting to help the Islamic State terror organization.

Adam Dandach (DAN-ditch) of Orange pleaded guilty Monday to attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State and to lying on a passport application.

Prosecutors say Dandach could face up to 25 years in federal prison when sentenced Jan. 11.

Dandach was stopped last July while trying to board a flight for Turkey. He told FBI agents he was heading to Syria and planned to pledge allegiance and offer assistance to the Islamic State.

Dandach lied on a passport application when he claimed he accidentally threw away his old one. Prosecutors say he knew his mother confiscated his passport when she learned of his travel plans.
