Old ordnance | Two children injured in explo*sion in Yabroud city

Rif Dimashq province: SOHR sources have reported that two children sustained various injuries in the explosion of an old landmine near the cultural centre in Yabroud city in western Qalamoun in Rif Dimashq. The two children were taken to the hospital.

Earlier today, a 14-year-old boy was killed in the explosion of an unexploded projectile on the outskirts of Mahajjah town in Daraa countryside.

It is worth noting that the explosions of unexploded war ordnance continue to claim the lives of more civilians throughout Syria, amid inaction by relevant authorities which have exerted no tangible efforts to remove it, as well as the lack of awareness-raising campaigns supposed to be launched by organisations operating in the region.

Accordingly, SOHR has documented the death of 13 civilians, including a woman and nine children, due to explosions of old landmines, unexploded shells and bombs across Syria since early 2023. In addition, 15 civilians, including eight children and three women, sustained various injuries in the same period.

The casualties are distributed regionally as follows:

  • Areas controlled by Hayyaat Tahrir Al-Sham and opposition factions in Idlib: One fatality; a child, and one injured child.

  • Regime-controlled areas: Ten fatalities, including six children and two women, and ten injured civilians, including four children and two women.

  • “Euphrates Shield” area in east Aleppo countryside: One fatality, a child, and six injured people, including five children.

  • SDF-held areas: One fatality; a child.
