Baseless allegations | SOHR confirms “Iraqi faction” not blame for drone attack on Al-Tanf base of US-led Coalition, refuting faction’s statement

A faction known as “Formation of the Heirs” claiming its subordination to the so-called “Iraqi Islamic Resistance” issued a statement in which the faction claimed responsibility for the drone attack that hit “Al-Tanf” base of the International Coalition in 55-kilometres de-confliction zone on January 20, which left several members of the “Free Syrian Army” faction injured.

“We claim our responsibility for the attack that targeted Al-Tanf base in the Syrian desert at 12:30 pm, which the US occupation takes as its centre and to wage attacks in Iraq,” said the statement issued by the “Formation of the Heirs Brigade.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, in turn, refutes this statement and affirms that the statement is untrue and denies the responsibility of the aforementioned faction for the attack on Al-Tanf base.

SOHR confirms that the attack took place at midnight of Thursday, in the early hours of Friday morning, on January 20, contrary to the information released by the faction’s statement indicating that it had taken place on the afternoon of 20 January.

It is worth noting that Iranian-backed militias are belived to be responsible for the offensive on Coalition base as Iranian-backed militias deploy in areas close to Al-Tanf base.

On January 20, SOHR sources reported that Al-Tanaf base where International Coalition Forces are stationed in the 55-kilometre de-confliction zone near the Syria-Jordan-Iraq border triangle came under attack that morning by unknown drones believed to be affiliated with Iranian-backed militias.

According to SOHR sources, the drones executed several airstrikes on the base, leaving several members of the “Free Syria Army” (former Maghawir Al-Thawra) injured, amid a state of high alert by Coalition Forces in the region.

It is worth noting that this was the first attack of its kind in the past five months and the first attack on Coalition bases in 2023.
