Old ordnance | Child killed in landmine explosion in Afrin countryside

Aleppo province: A 14-year-old child was killed by the explosion of an old landmine, while herding sheep in Bashmarah village in Sherawa district of Afrin countryside in areas where Kurdish forces” and regime forces are deployed in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

This comes in light of the inaction by local authorities and organisations to remove the remnants of war scattered over a large swath of Syrian territory.

Accordingly, SOHR has documented the death of 19 civilians, including a woman and 14 children, due to explosions of old landmines, unexploded shells and bombs across Syria since early 2023. In addition, 27 civilians, including 15 children and three women, sustained various injuries in the same period.

The casualties are distributed regionally as follows:

• Areas controlled by Hayyaat Tahrir Al-Sham and opposition factions in Idlib: One fatality; a child, and one injured child.

• Regime-controlled areas: 15 fatalities, including ten children and a woman, and 14 injured civilians, including six children and two women.

• “Euphrates Shield” area in east Aleppo countryside: One fatality, a child, and six injured people, including five children.

• SDF-held areas: Two fatalities; two children and six injured civilians, including two children.
