Old ordnance | Landmine explosion kills man and his son in eastern Hama

Hama province: SOHR sources have reported that a young man and his father were killed this morning by the explosion of an old landmine in their motorcycle, while they were travelling in the west of Duwayzin area in Salamiyah countryside in eastern Hama.

It is worth noting that war remnants are prevalent over large geographical areas across Syria, amid inaction by authorities and local organisations which have exerted no efforts to remove them.

Accordingly, SOHR has documented the death of 130 civilians, including nine women and 30 children, due to explosions of old landmines, unexploded shells and bombs across Syria since early 2023. In addition, over 178 civilians, including 49 children and four women, sustained various injuries.

The casualties are distributed regionally as follows:

  • Areas controlled by Hayyaat Tahrir Al-Sham and opposition factions in Idlib: Three fatalities; including a child, and five injured civilians, including three children.

  • Regime-controlled areas: 119 fatalities, including 22 children and nine women, and 150 injured civilians, including 29 children and three women. There are 65 truffle pickers died, including two children and six women, and 98 others injured.

  • “Euphrates Shield” area in east Aleppo countryside: Three fatality, three children, and ten injured people: a woman and nine children.

  • SDF-held areas: Four fatalities, including three children, and 12 injured civilians, including seven children. There is a little truffle picker among the injured people.

  • “Peace Spring” area in north Al-Raqqah countryside: A child was killed and another was injured.
