Security vacuum | Two ex-members of opposition factions assassinated in Daraa

Daraa province: SOHR sources have reported that two young men from Mahajah town in Daraa countryside were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the same town. The two young men had worked for local factions in Daraa, before they struck reconciliation deals in 2018, but they did not join any military formations later.

This coincides with the escalating security chaos in areas which experienced Russian-sponsored reconciliation deals between members of local factions and regime forces in 2018.

Since early 2024, SOHR activists have documented 69 incidents of security disorder in Daraa province, which left 81 people dead; and they are as follows:

  • 19 civilians, including two women and four children.

  • 30 regime soldiers, members and collaborators with regime security services.

  • Four men accused of “involving in drug business.”

  • Two members of the Russian-backed 8th Brigade.

  • 12 ISIS members, including a commander.

  • 12 members of local factions.

  • A regime dissident colonel.

  • One unidentified person.
