Tartous province: Heavy gunfire was heard this afternoon in the northern neighbourhoods of Banias city, which are mostly muslim alawite. It turns out to be the mourning celebration when the body of lieutenant Ali Wajih Shadud was returned home. Ali was the leader of the National Defence forces militia in Banias. He was killed during the clashes with the Islamist rebel factions, it is yet unknown which area exactly he died in.

It is extremely important to mention that more than 300 civilians, including tens of women and children, were killed on the 2nd and 3rd of May 2013 in the two massacres committed by the National Defence Forces militia in the Ras al-Ein neighbourhood of Banias and al-Bayda village, south of Banias; both are primarily muslim sunni.
