Nearly 1,400 dead since Syria rebel-jihadist clashes began

BEIRUT: Almost 1,400 people have been killed in Syria since clashes between rebel forces and the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) erupted last month, activists said Thursday.

The 20 days of violence included executions and car bombs, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The number of people killed since Jan. 3 rose to 1,395 Wednesday night, in ongoing fighting across Aleppo, Idlib, Raqqa, Hama, Deir al-Zor and Homs governorates.

The Observatory said that 190 civilians were shot dead, 21 of whom were executed by ISIS fighters at a pediatric hospital in Aleppo that they had seized, while the rest succumbed to their injuries.
