Tens of thousands of displaced people of al-Raqqah suffer tragic and poor living conditions; intensity of planted mines hinder the return of thousands of them to their homes

The “Euphrates Wrath” operation forces continue their military operations aiming to reach Al-Raqqah city, after achieving a wide advancement in Al-Raqqah province at the expense of the “Islamic State” organization, during of which the operation’s forces took control of tens of villages, farms and areas, most notably Al-Tabaqa city, its airbase and strategic dam, and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitored the operation which was announced months ago and mainly aim to isolate Al-Raqqah city from its countryside, and paving the way for the start of the grand battle of Al-Raqqah, through which Al-Raqqah city will be controlled by the forces of the “Euphrates Wrath” operation which consists of the Syria Democratic Forces, US Special Forces and the Syrian Elite Forces supported by the International Coalition’s warplanes.

The advancement and military operations in the northern countryside of Raqqa which started about 25 weeks ago on the 6th of November 2016 were accompanied by massive displacement for tens of thousands of civilian citizens from their villages and towns towards areas far away from the clashes and towards camps set up to house them. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has been able during the past few days to monitor the displacement processes and the living conditions of these displaced people and the tragic situations that are worsening day after day.

Local sources informed the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that their living conditions were not improving, neither in winter nor in summer as a result of the unavailability of the basic materials, living and life supplies, like blankets, food and medicine, where those in charge of several camps in the northern, northwestern and western countryside attributed the reasons for the lack of assistance to the displaced persons and the lack of quantities due to insufficient assistance from international organizations, they have also described the aid they received in past weeks and months as “modest and few”

The past few days have seen the displacement of about 40000 civilians from areas controlled by the “Islamic State” organization and from the villages where the clashes took place; to areas controlled by the Syria Democratic Forces in the countryside of Al-Raqqah city, some of the displaced citizens went towards villages in the northern Al-Raqqah or areas of Manbij and the northern countryside of Aleppo, while the remaining people went towards camps that were prepared for them. There are several camps in the areas that are controlled by the Syria Democratic Forces, like Al-Karama Camp which is formed from several camp gatherings, like the camps of Al-Karama, al-Mhawish, al-Kasun, M’eizileh and Ain Issa, and other small scattered camps like Kibsh, al-Rajm al-Abyad and the vicinity of Hazima village, the camps of Mahmoudley, Al-Jerniyyeh and al-Safsafa.

These camps have tens of thousands of displaced persons, except for the displaced people who went to their relatives in other villages and did not go to camps, while the reliable sources confirmed to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that thousands of displaced persons have returned consecutively to their villages, of which they displaced as a result of the ongoing military operations, while leading and local sources confirmed to the Syrian Observatory that the operation forces of the “Euphrates Wrath” are not preventing the displaced people of Al-Tabaqa city from returning to their homes in the city, and the sources confirmed to the Syrian Observatory that the inspection operations are still underway in Al-Tabaqa city and in the rest of villages and farms to which the Syria Democratic Forces and the Syrian Elite Forces had advanced to, and that the postponement of entry of citizens to their areas which were controlled by the forces of “Euphrates Wrath” operation is because of the intensity of mines planted in these areas, of which clearing and neutralizing, and finishing the inspection process take time, also the fighters have expressed their astonishment of the organization’s unprecedented plant of these large quantities of mines.

We in the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights join our voices to the voice of the displaced Syrians of their land in all the areas, and we call the international community and the humanitarian and relief organization and agencies to maximize their efforts and increase their support for the displaced people and the camps of the displaced people, which are now hosting hundreds of thousands of citizens in most of the Syrian areas, also we call these organizations and other international relief bodies and medical organizations to provide the necessary assistance for tens of thousands of patients and thousands of displaced persons, who are living in harsher conditions because of the unavailability of tents or Blankets and the lack of food, clothing, clothes and medicine, and we call on the active international parties to act and hurry in providing these assistance and aid where the blessed month of Ramadan is coming, the Syrian citizen has become between the hammer of shelling, hunger and disease, and, the anvil of need, poverty and the inability to have basic living needed.
