Syrian refugees to arrive soon in Welwyn Garden City

A Syrian refugee family of five is set to start a new life in Welwyn Hatfield before the end of the month.

The family, including three girls aged below ten, is currently living in a refugee camp, but will be resettled in a Welwyn Hatfield house under a government scheme backed by the borough council and the Refugee Council.

Vicky Woodcraft of Herts Welcomes Syrian Refugees, which campaigned for the council to join the scheme, said: “They include three little girls, aged six, six and eight, so if anyone has any really nice suitable toys they would like to donate (should be new or newly new) we would be happy to pass them on.

“We would also really like some gardening tools if possible.”

Anyone who can help should email her at [email protected]

Since fighting erupted in spring 2011, about half a million Syrians have been killed, and about 11million have fled their homes.

Most are living in refugee camps in neighbouring countries such as Lebanon and Turkey.
