After expanding their control to more than 65% of the area of Deir Ezzor city … the regime forces intensify their shelling to force the organization to withdraw and to keep its members away from involving in a street war

Deir Ezzor Province – The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: finishing the operation of lifting the siege on Deir Ezzor city completes its first 72 hours, after the regime forces managed to open the artery coming from Damascus, and the operation of lifting the siege was carried out on 3 stages the first was to lift the siege on the Brigade 137, then lifting the siege of Deir Ezzor Military Airport and the bloc of neighborhoods related to it, and the third stage was to reach the western entrance of Deir Ezzor city at the area of Panorama area after taking the control of Damascus – Deir Ezzor road, and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights observed during the past 24 hours intensive violent shelling by artillery shells and tanks of the regime forces accompanied by dozens of raids by Russian as well as the regime’s warplanes and helicopters, which were accompanied by a violent attack in which the regime forces failed to reach Hwejat Kate’ in the Euphrates River, where these forces tried to achieve advancement during Al-Hwiqa neighborhood, within desperate attempts by the regime forces to besiege the organization in the city or force it to withdraw before encircling the city.

Reliable sources confirmed to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that the regime forces which control about 64.3% of the area pf Deir Ezzor which is 34.7 square kilometers, are trying to shorten the military operation in Deir Ezzor and hurry to finish it, to achieve “morale victory” by repeating the attempts to besiege the whole city, and to force the “Islamic State” organization to withdraw from areas of its control which are 35.7% of the area of the city, in order not to turn the military operation by the regime into street war which will result in falling casualties in the ranks of them, especially the regime forces intend to head after Deir Ezzor city, to control its countryside.

The importance of controlling al-Thardah mountain comes from it being overlooking Deir Ezzor Airbase and also it contributes in securing the airbase, where it secures its southern section, also the regime forces can target the towns of al-Mri’eyyeh and al-Bo Omar east of the Airbase, and if the regime forces advance to both towns or fully observe them by firearm then they will secure the takeoff and land of warplanes inside the Deir Ezzor Airbase and increase its security, this also will secure regime’s land forces in case they advanced towards the areas of Jafra and Hwyjet Sakr to besiege the city completely from the side of the western banks of the Euphrates River, while the eastern banks of the river remain open to organization if it decided to withdraw from the city, also the regime forces were able to control the mountain overlooking Deir Ezzor city which complete their control over the west of the city.

The “Islamic State” organization was able to take control of al-Thardah Mountain in mid-September 2016, after a violent attack following strikes by the International Coalition warplanes that targeted locations of regime forces on the mountain, killing more than 90 members of the regime forces and injuring tens of other members, and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights published on Sunday the 10th of September 2017 that the first groups of the advanced forces of the regime have met in the media with the forces in Panorama area at the western entrance of Deir Ezzor, after the regime forces managed during last night to hold their control on the Christian cemetery and on the whole road between Deir Ezzor and the capital Damascus passing by Homs, and the meeting took place after mine sweepers opened a passage and dismantled mines to allow the forces to cross and meet in the media, in which reliable sources confirmed that the regime forces intended to delay the announcement of the meeting until the presence of the media that related and loyal to them, reliable sources also confirmed to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that the photos which were broadcasted on the regime media as if they were of the meeting of the forces inside the Deir Ezzor Military Airport, were not from the place located in the area stretched between the block of Deir Ezzor Military Airport and the block of the Brigade 137 and the neighborhoods related to each block.
