Turkey looks to evacuate wounded from Damascus suburb

Two-month-old Karim Abdallah lost his eye and mother in the bombing of Eastern Ghouta by regime forces.

The shot depicts 40-day-old Karim Abdallah, wrapped in a puffy red jacket, with crescent-shaped scarring where his left eye should be and a dark red welt on his forehead.

Photos have circulated the net, with politicians, athletes, and media users joining the movement, covering their left eye out of solidarity with Karim and tagging their posts with the words #SolidarityWithKarim, #StandWith Karim, #EasternGhouta, and #BabyKarim.

In November, the United Nations humanitarian adviser for Syria called the situation in eastern Ghouta a humanitarian emergency.

Amer Almohibany, who launched the campaign and also a freelance photographer in Eastern Ghouta said that ‘I visited the baby, and he made his mark on me even before taking his picture.

“I was putting my eye on the viewfinder and I was truly crying as I am seeing Karim through my camera”. It haunted me, ‘ said Almohibany, 28.

The International Committee of the Red Cross describes a “critical” humanitarian situation in suburban Damascus.

The British ambassador also wrote that ‘When we sit around the UNSC & warn that inaction will mean more people are going to die.

Eastern Ghouta activists have mobilised quickly to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in the region.

“The horrors faced by the children of Ghouta are unimaginable”.

“The atrocities experienced by the children of Ghouta are indescribable”, said a Syrian humanitarian aid organization chief.

A year ago registered as the deadliest for Syrian children with at least 652 killed over the 12 months, a 20 percent jump from 2015.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it witnessed the October 29 shelling in Hammuriah and in other places in the Damascus suburbs.
