The Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad, assigned his brother, Brigadier General Maher al-Assad, as the commander of the 4th Division Special Forces, where the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights learned that this assignment took place on the 24th of April 2018, and this assignment also came in the wake of the battle of the Eastern Ghouta, in conjunction with the ongoing clashes in the southern part of the capital Damascus, which the 4thDivision Forces have been taking part in greatly, also these forces are located in the vicinity of the capital Damascus.
This assignment also came about 17 months after the promotion of Maher al-Assad from a Brigadier to a Brigadier General, which took place in early 2017, after the battles of control on Aleppo city, where the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights obtained information at that time from a number of reliable sources, about promoting the Brigadier Maher al-Assad, the Syrian President’s brother, to a Brigadier General, and assigning him as the chief of staff of the 4th Division in the regime force.
