SDF Says Insurrection of IS Prisoners Under Control

Earlier the day, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that there was a new riot by the Islamic State militants inside Al-Sena’a prison in Ghuwayran neighbourhood in Al-Hasakah.

SDF spokesperson Kino Gabriel explained in a statement that a “large-scale” insurrection was carried out by the IS prisoners who managed to take “full” control of the prison after they were able to remove the doors of the cells and corridors, after which the special forces and anti-terrorist forces were dispatched to deal with the situation.

“The situation inside the prison was controlled after a day-long insurrection that ended with joint negotiations between the representatives of our forces and international coalition forces on one side, and ISIS detainees on the other hand,” he added.

The SDF guards the Syrian prisons inside which about 10,000 IS fighters are held. The US-backed Kurdish forces said that they believe the US-led coalition and international community have a responsibility to resolve the issue of IS prisoners and provide more support to the SDF.

“We believe that the international coalition forces to fight ISIS and the international community have a responsibility to find a solution to the issue of detained ISIS members, provide more support for greater security measures, and improve the conditions of the detainees inside prisons in North and East Syria,” Gabriel concluded.
