high alert

Residents also told the agency that the attacks took place south of the city of al-Mayadin on the Euphrates River, which has become a major base for a number of Iranian armed factions, most of them from Iraq, from when the expulsion of ISIS elements took almost 4 years ago.

Residents said members of Iranian-backed armed factions roaming the streets were placed on high alert and ambulances were seen speeding towards the deserted outskirts of the city after hearing several explosions.

Additionally, residents added that militias are now controlling the city, as part of their growing presence in Deir ez-Zor governorate.

Missile transport

The observatory reported on September 25 that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard had deliberately transferred Iranian-made “Burkan H2” missiles from a militia weapons depot near the al-Shibli archaeological site in Badiyat al-Mayadin, east of Deir. ez-Zor, and transported them by armored trucks to the points and concentration areas of the militia, affiliated with Tehran in the Maadan area, in the eastern countryside of Raqqa. The observatory said no information has been received as to the reasons for this operation, nor whether it falls under the name of “continuous equipment” by these militias to target coalition bases and sites east of the Euphrates, or for other reasons.

Israeli concern

In previous similar incidents, the international coalition has denied launching raids, opening the door to analyzes that suggest the raids were Israeli.

It is noteworthy that Israel, concerned about Iran’s growing regional influence and its military presence in Syria, claims to have carried out hundreds of attacks in Syria to slow Tehran’s consolidation of its position.

Focus on Albukamal

Over the past year, Israeli drone strikes have focused on the border town of Al-Bukamal, southeast of Al-Mayadin, which is on a strategic supply route to the Iranian-backed armed factions that regularly dispatch reinforcements from Iraq to Syria.

These factions also control large areas of the border on the Iraqi side.

According to Western intelligence sources, Israel has expanded the scope of its airstrikes on suspected arms transfers and deployments by Iranian-backed militias and their Lebanese Hezbollah allies supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
