SOHR: Migrant Boat Sinks Off Syrian Coast Killing At Least 15 People

At least 15 people were drowned and eight others survived on Thursday when a boat of migrants sank off the Syrian coast, as search continues to find others.

The Syrian Ministry of Transport quoted Samer Kobrosly, Director General of the Syrian Sea Ports, as saying that “rescue operations are continuing” at the sites of al-Mentar region, Arwad Island off the coast of Tartus.

Kobrosly stated that eight people were rescued and taken to al-Bassel Hospital in Tartus, and 15 bodies were recovered.

The search for survivors continues, said the ministry’s website.

Nearly two hours later, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), reported that the number of people drowned has reached 26, including two women and three children, adding that “The fate of nearly 100 more people remains unknown.”

The boat, which carried people of different  nationalities, set off from Tarablus in Lebanon a few days ago for migration, sources told SOHR.
