SOHR: Russia fires anti-aircraft missiles in Turkey-held areas in Syria

Russian fighter jets on Friday fired several air-to-air missiles in the sky of the Turkish-led towns of Afrin and Marea in northern Syria, reported a war monitor. The purpose behind the launch of the missiles is not clear.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the jets launched missiles in the vicinity of Afrin and Marea towns which are controlled by Turkey and its Syrian mercenaries.

The UK-based war monitor did not elaborate why the aerial raids were made but noted that it “coincided with the flight by eight Russian fighter jets over the area.”

Hawar News Agency, an outlet affiliated to Kurdish administration in northeast Syria (Rojava), also reported the “airstrike.”

This comes days after Turkey launched an aerial offensive against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern Syria.

Turkey seeks to carry out a ground incursion as well but Russia and the US have opposed it.

Russia is the main backer of the Syrian regime, fighting some Turkey-backed groups for years.
